How to Correctly Lay Sod
Transform your yard instantly with a healthy, professionally installed lawn. Follow these simple steps to ensure your new sod establishes quickly and stays beautiful for years to come.
1. Measure Your Area
Measure the length and width of your yard to calculate how much sod you need. We recommend ordering an additional 5–10% to account for cuts, curves, and waste.
2. Remove Existing Grass & Debris
Clear the area completely before installation:
- Remove old grass and weeds
- Pick up rocks, sticks, and debris
- Use a sod cutter or tiller if necessary
Fresh sod must make direct contact with the soil for proper rooting.
3. Grade & Level the Soil
A properly graded lawn improves drainage and prevents standing water.
- Fill low spots
- Smooth uneven areas
- Keep a slight slope away from buildings and foundations
For best results, the finished soil should sit approximately 1 inch below sidewalks and driveways.
4. Prepare the Soil
Healthy soil creates a healthier lawn.
- Loosen the top 2–4 inches of soil
- Add quality topsoil or compost if needed
- Apply starter fertilizer before laying sod
- Rake the surface smooth and lightly water the soil
5. Install Sod Immediately
Sod should be installed as soon as possible after delivery.
Start along a straight edge such as:
- Driveways
- Sidewalks
- Patios
- Fence lines
Lay each row tightly together in a staggered brick pattern.
6. Keep Seams Tight
Push edges firmly together without overlapping.
Avoid:
- Gaps between rolls
- Overlapping seams
- Small filler strips whenever possible
Tight seams help create a smooth, seamless lawn appearance.
7. Cut Around Curves Carefully
Use a sharp utility knife or sod knife to shape pieces around curves, flower beds, and landscape features.
Clean cuts create a more professional finished look.
8. Roll the Sod
After installation, use a lawn roller partially filled with water to:
- Improve soil contact
- Remove air pockets
- Help roots establish faster
This is one of the most important steps in the installation process.
9. Water Immediately
Water your new sod within 30 minutes of installation.
10. Limit Foot Traffic
Avoid heavy foot traffic for approximately 2–3 weeks while the sod establishes roots.
11. First Mowing
Mow your lawn when:
- Grass reaches 3–4 inches tall
- Sod feels firmly rooted and does not lift easily
Always use a sharp mower blade to avoid damaging new grass.
First 2 Weeks
- Keep sod consistently moist
- Water daily, and more during hot weather
- Avoid allowing the sod to dry out
After Root Establishment
Transition to deeper, less frequent watering to encourage strong root growth.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Installing sod on compacted soil
- Leaving gaps between seams
- Delaying watering after installation
- Overwatering until puddling occurs
- Mowing too early
- Ignoring drainage or grading issues
